News on the Star Trek movie front has been sparse of late. With the franchise focussing more on its small screen success fans have been left to wander what’s next for Kirk and co.
We’ve covered news in the past about talks for a Star Trek 4 reuniting Chris Pine with his on-screen dad Chris Hemsworth had broken down. There was also the news that Quentin Tarantino had written and may direct his own Trek adventure (more on that below).
Then there was the news that Legion writer Noah Hawley was also developing his own take on the classic sci-fi franchise.
As per a new rumour from Deadline it seem that all future Trek movie projects are on the back burner.
Paramount Picture recently appointed former Fox box Emma Watts to take over the studios upcoming slate. Watts is reporting keen to make sure that any Trek project going in to production is right for the franchise’s devout audience.
Deadline’s report also holds a number of interesting tidbits about what’s been going on behind the scenes.
Hawley hasn’t exited his Trek project. Whilst it was slowly going in to early prep stages it seems the studio has decided to slow things down. Why? Well it’s reported that the story of his film revolves around a deadly pandemic which is wiping out civilisations across the galaxy… maybe a little too close to home?
As for the Tarantino project it seems the famed director is no longer looking to helm the project. It’s rumoured that script, last poked at by The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith would revolve around Kirin and the crew travelling back in time to 1930’s New York. There they would face off a number of classic gangster types of the era.
Let’s not forget that S.J. Clarkson was also set to helm a Star Trek project at Paramount. Hers would be the teaming up between Kirk’s senior (Hemsworth) and junior (Pine). Deadline still believes this money has fallen apart due to budgetary concerns.
