After a hard weekends work at the Chinese box office Aquaman has proven to be a huge success. Official estimates have the DC Films/Warner Bros. release earning an immense $93.6M over the three day weekend.
That number is the highest opening for a modern DC movie in China. That surpasses the openings of Justice League ($50.5M), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($55.7M), and Wonder Woman ($37.6M). In terms of the latter Aquaman has surpassed the lifetime gross of Wonder Woman ($93M) in just three days.
That $93.6M figure is the largest December opening in The Middle Kingdom as well as Warner Bros. largest debut in the territory. Aquaman is now also the number 1 movie globally despite only playing in one market.
Not a bad first weekend at the box office. The movie rolls out to a further 40 territories over the coming week before opening North America on December 21.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an acition-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film also stars Amber Heard as Mera; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe as Vulko; Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry; Dolph Lundgren as Nereus; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta; with Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.
The film is being produced by Peter Safran, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
